Family Law Practice
With over twenty years of experience in Family Law, Drew H. Peterson currently has a limited family practice only, primarily limited to family mediation, collaborative law, so-called "unbundled legal services", and uncontested family legal issues.
Alaskans are fortunate (although caution is advised) to have a legislatively approved "Dissolution " procedure, allowing parties to terminate their marriages without the necessity of attorneys under some circumstances, notably when they are in agreement on the legal issues involved in the dissolution (custody, support, property division, etc.). For parties who are unable to agree on such terms, we recommend family mediation as a more human and less expensive first alternative to a contested divorce. It is our belief that mediation should be attempted in every case prior to litigation, although where there are serious issues of domestic violence, mental illness, or substance abuse involved, or similar concerns, parties are advised to discuss such issues with the mediator prior to the initial mediation session to insure that appropriate and adequate safeguards are in place
While the majority of our family practice consists of our family mediation practice, we also maintain a limited family law practice. This limited family practice consists primarily of advising clients in mediation with other mediators; representing individuals in "collaborative divorces", a growing national trend in family law seeking a cooperative divorce outcome by pre-arrangement of both sides; providing short term limited so-called "unbundled legal services" another national trend in the family law arena; and finally, representing individuals in uncontested family matters.
